A Double Materiality Analysis in SMEs helps a company identify which sustainability topics are most significant for its operations. In practice, it is not a complex reporting exercise but a way to structure the company’s activities and their impacts.

In many SMEs, sustainability work begins with the question: where should we start? Double materiality analysis offers a simple answer. It enables the company to examine both its own impacts and the sustainability issues that may affect its business.

The process usually begins with an examination of the company’s operations. It is important to understand where the company operates, what kinds of products or services it produces and who is affected by its activities. This helps identify the sustainability topics that are directly connected to the company’s everyday operations.

Typical topics in a double materiality analysis for SMEs include

  • energy use and emissions
  • use of materials and waste
  • employee well-being and occupational safety
  • supply chain responsibility
  • customer expectations and sustainability requirements.

Once the key topics have been identified, the next step is to assess their significance from two perspectives.

The first perspective is the company’s impact on the environment and people. This means identifying in which areas the company’s activities have the greatest effects, for example on natural resources, the climate or employee well-being.

The second perspective is business impact. This examines which sustainability issues may affect the company’s costs, risks, competitiveness or customer relationships.

When the topics are evaluated from these two perspectives, the company can identify the issues that are truly material. Often it becomes clear that only a few topics stand clearly above the others.

For an SME, this is an important observation. Sustainability work does not mean that everything must be done at the same time. Double materiality analysis helps narrow the focus and concentrate on the issues that have the greatest impact.

At the same time, the analysis helps the company engage in constructive dialogue with its stakeholders. When the company can explain which sustainability topics are most material to it and why, transparency and trust are strengthened.
