Sustainability work in an SME should be built from the business itself, not from a reporting framework. This is a simple principle that is surprisingly often forgotten when the discussion turns to standards and requirements.

Many SMEs begin sustainability work by selecting a model or reporting framework. It seems logical, but it easily leads to a situation where action is subordinated to structure. Sustainability becomes a document rather than development

A functional approach proceeds differently.

The first step is to identify the current state. All companies already practice sustainability in their daily operations. The question is not whether to start from zero, but whether the existing actions and their significance are recognized.

The next step is to define materiality in a light and business-driven way. Which sustainability themes directly affect the company’s risks, costs, competitiveness, or customer relationships? Not all themes are material for every company.

Third, set clear goals and simple metrics. They do not need to be complex. What matters most is that they are used in decision-making.

Fourth, proceed in small but systematic steps. Sustainability work is not a one-time project, but a continuous development process.

Only after this does reporting come into play. The role of reporting is to support action and communication—not to define the entire effort. Read also: VSME – hype or real value for SMEs?

Within this framework, reporting structures such as the voluntary VSME standard for SMEs can serve as useful tools. However, they should not determine the direction of an SME’s sustainability work. A framework is a tool, not the starting point of sustainability work. VSME standard voi toimia hyödyllisenä työkaluna. Ne eivät kuitenkaan saa määrittää pk-yrityksen vastuullisuustyön suuntaa. Kehys on työkalu, ei vastuullisuustyön lähtökohta.
