What on Earth Is A Guide for Moving to Hämeenlinna?

Not an official city guide. And not quite a conventional moving guide either.

A Guide for Moving to Hämeenlinna tells the story of the city, its history, people, places and peculiarities in a way you may not find in official city publications. It covers both Hämeenlinna’s best-known gems and places you may have walked past for years without ever knowing their stories.

The guide is intended for people moving to Hämeenlinna or considering a move – but just as much for those who already live here and would like to see their hometown through fresh eyes.

A Little Taster

”Friendly, but not necessarily your friend right away

The slow-paced Häme way of life may be most noticeable when getting to know people. One person who moved to Hämeenlinna describes the locals as slow to warm up. At times, they have even wondered whether they had done something to offend someone when a friendship did not seem to be progressing. Over time, however, they have learned to appreciate this particular Häme trait.

This is useful information for a newcomer. If your Hämeenlinna neighbour spends the first year greeting you with a nod, it does not necessarily mean that anything is wrong. In the second year, they might add a “moro” – a casual hello. By the third year, you may already be discussing the weather. After that, the relationship is starting to look fairly serious.

There is a certain reserve to the Häme character, but the other side of it can be permanence. Someone who has lived in the city for two years sums it up like this: “Once you get to know people from Hämeenlinna, you have friends for life.” In the same context, they perhaps capture the Häme attitude to life even better: “What’s the hurry in a life that’s already complete?” It could well serve as the motto for this chapter.

About the Author

A Guide for Moving to Hämeenlinna was written and photographed by Jukka K. Niemi.

I am an entrepreneur from Hämeenlinna and a curious observer of my hometown. Over the years, I have realised that Hämeenlinna is full of stories, places and small details that you can walk past for years without ever knowing anything about them.

The idea for this guide grew out of a desire to present Hämeenlinna as something more than a conventional city or tourist guide. I have walked around the city, photographed places, explored their histories and tried to discover what makes Hämeenlinna uniquely Hämeenlinna. The guide includes some of the city’s gems, traces of its history, local peculiarities and a few things that people from Hämeenlinna have perhaps learned to laugh at themselves.

All the photographs in the guide are my own, and the guide is an independently produced, unofficial publication.

Many of the photographs and observations in the guide came about while exploring the city with my dog Teppo, and more recently with Hessu.

So, Shall We Move to Hämeenlinna?

Now you already know a little more about what to expect. You’ll discover the rest in the guide – and, of course, by living in Hämeenlinna.
